Children's Hospital of Michigan
Inpatient and specialty training is integrated with the larger Children's Hospital of Michigan pediatric program in the Detroit Medical Center — a Level I Pediatric Trauma & Burn Center with a Level IV NICU and ECMO capabilities, and the hospital where the AAP was founded. Outpatient training happens in Federally Qualified Health Centers and private practice clinics across metro Detroit.

Accreditation
A 3-year ACGME-accredited categorical pediatrics program. Regardless of degree (MD or DO), all graduates are eligible to sit for the American Board of Pediatrics exam.

Mission
The Detroit Wayne County Health Authority GME Consortium is a community-based graduate medical education consortium formed to train primary care physicians for the medically underserved and high physician-shortage areas of Detroit — preparing pediatricians for the rigors of clinical practice with a distinct focus on the social determinants of health.

Welcome to the pediatric residency program at Authority Health. I'm a pediatric hospitalist at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, where I trained, and the mother of three wonderfully crazy children. I have the privilege of leading this creative, innovative program, which prepares residents for the rigors of clinical practice with a distinct focus on the social determinants of health.
We value wellness, diversity, and inclusion. We provide excellent, intensive inpatient education with our partners at CHM — but we also believe training residents outside the four walls of a hospital is essential to understanding the social factors that shape our patients' health.
Our one-year Population Health certification, in partnership with the University of Michigan School of Public Health, adds another layer to the well-rounded, community-focused education we're so proud of. And aside from our strong academics, what I value most is our small family feel — it takes a family to successfully complete residency, and I'm so proud of our residents and faculty.

Every Authority Health resident earns a Certificate in Population Health and Health Equity (CPHHE) through the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
The one-year program runs during the second year of residency and brings together Authority Health residents from every specialty — pediatrics, psychiatry, internal medicine, and family medicine — to build the awareness and skills to support their patients' health from a population health perspective.

Six weeks in Mutomo, Kenya
Through a long-standing relationship with the volunteer organization CMMB, residents can spend six weeks at a medical mission hospital and its outreach sites in rural Mutomo, Kenya — working across the pediatric unit, newborn unit, and neonatal intensive care unit. It's a chance to build clinical skills and autonomy, see different pathology, and grow personally and professionally.

Three years, built around continuity and community
Rotations run in four-week blocks — 13 per academic year — with A/B rotations, limited Jeopardy coverage, no 24-hour call in PGY-1, four weeks of vacation, and one four-day holiday.

Do you have minimum USMLE or COMLEX scores?
No — there is no minimum score cutoff.
Do you accept both the USMLE and the COMLEX?
Yes, we accept either the USMLE or the COMLEX.
How many letters of recommendation do you require?
Three.
Do you accept osteopathic and allopathic graduates?
Yes — both DO and MD graduates.
Do you accept international graduates?
Yes, but the program is unable to sponsor applicants who need visas.
Do I need USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Level 2 completed to apply?
No — we review applications without Step/Level 2 scores. However, we must have documentation of successful completion of Step 2 (CK and CS) by the time of your interview.
Is there a maximum number of years since medical school graduation?
No limit on years since graduation — however, we do not consider applicants who have not been active in a clinical setting for two years or more.
Is the program approved to train VA-eligible residents?
Yes.
